Helpful Hints

Consistency is key!
Although progress may be slow and extra work needed may be difficult, the more consistency with follow through, the better the progress.

Reinforcement and Bribery are NOT the same thing!
Reinforcement is teaching your child to do something (you provide a stimuli which increases the likelihood of that behavior in the future). Bribery is your child teaching you when to give them something (to avoid your child doing something you give them something).

Be clear about goals!
Don't be afraid to speak up regarding goals for your child. A parent is an important part of the child's support team and should always play and important part in the child's progress.

It's not the system - It's how the system is used!
Knowledge of the science behind systems is where the why of effective and ineffective systems will appear. Initially a child may need a visual or a primary tangible reinforcer to motivate behavior. The difference comes when someone doesn't use those primary reinforcers to shape secondary reinforcers and when the reinforcers are not phased out. Systems like this aren't meant to be stable. Instead, they are meant to start initiation with wanted behavior and then to shape new responses and then phased out as quickly as possible.
